Best wishes to Joe Sears – 40 Years dedicated to TFMoran!

Everyone at TFMoran wishes Joe Sears the very best in his retirement, well-deserved after working over 40 years with the Company!  In September, on Joe’s 40th Anniversary, TFMoran staff celebrated his 40 Years with an office party dedicated to Joe. And, just before his last official day of working for TFMoran, president Bob Duval gave a few words of congratulations at the Company’s Annual Harvest Lunch:

“If one thing is clear; that is Joe is more than a fellow employee, Joe is an institution. Over the years, Joe has had many roles here: party chief, office manager, blueprint-maker, copier service technician, courier, delivery man, file card indexer, light bulb changer, Christmas decorator, bartender, supply orderer, receptionist, fix-it man, furniture maker, keeper of tools, file manager, grounds crew, and this is just the recent part of his career.  I could go on and on.

Although there is one thing he wasn’t particularly good at – that is, throwing things away.  We had to do that when he wasn’t looking.

In the past few years, perhaps Joe’s most important job has been getting our work down on paper and getting it out the door on time.  It is perhaps too easy to take this for granted, but ultimately our best work does no one any good unless it is plotted, scanned, copied, collated, and mailed or delivered into the right hands at the right time.

Joe was an indispensable part of that process, and we all learned to rely on Joe – often at the last minute – to get it done.  And he never let us down.  This is just one example of the extra effort on the part of every single member of the team that is necessary to become – and remain – a successful company.  The saying goes that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.  And Joe has been a strong link in his many roles for the past 40 years.

So it is with great pleasure that I present this small token of our appreciation and ask everyone to join me and congratulate Joe on 40 years of service to TFMORAN!!

Forty years ago Joe graduated from college in 1976 with a BS in Business Management. He came out of school seeking a job at a Navy shipyard. While waiting for that position to begin, Joe took a temporary position at TFMoran. Lucky for us, temporary became permanent. Beginning in 1977 in Manchester, NH, Joe was among the original TFMoran crew. Beginning as a land surveyor/service technician, Joe tried out almost every position in the office.

We thank Joe for all he has done, and wish him the very best in his golden years! We expect and hope he will drop by now and again, to let us know what he’s been up to in retirement life.

NHBR Honors Dylan Cruess

Manchester, NH – Dylan Cruess,
TFMoran’s chief operating officer, was
presented the 2017 Business Excellence
Award in Real Estate and Construction
by NH Business Review.
The award reception was held on
November 1 at the Radisson hotel in
downtown Manchester. This event
recognizes the imagination, hard
work, innovation, and achievements of
New Hampshire business owners and
operators.
“Dylan’s leadership, work ethic,
passion for community involvement, and
vision for TFMoran are why he is being
honored with this award,” announced
Mike Morin, NHBR’s award presenter.
“Mr. Cruess and the leadership team
at TFMoran have steered the company
through a period of unprecedented
growth since taking over in 2013.”
“Encouraging teamwork among all
employees is one essential ingredient to
the company’s success,” Cruess explains,
“as well as a positive work culture and
giving back to the community.”
“Because of his unusual background,
he understands the engineering,
surveying, and project management more
than a typical COO,” Morin adds“That
understanding has enabled him to
continue the original client-focused vision
of TFMoran while strategically growing
the company to new levels.”

Red Cross Thanks TFMoran for Support

Bedford, NH – On November 9, Maria
Devlin, CEO, American Red Cross-NH
& VT, visited the TFMoran corporate
office to thank the company and staff
for generously supporting the Hurricane
Harvey and Irma relief efforts.
Both the Bedford and Portsmouth
offices were presented with a contribution
plaque. Devlin explained how the relief efforts
were progressing from the devastating
hurricanes that hit Texas and Florida.
“The employees of TFMoran have
shown time and time again that they are
willing to pitch in to help out the people
in need whether they are in the next town
or half way around the world,” said Dylan
Cruess, COO of TFMoran. “That’s the
kind of people we are proud to employ
here, compassionate and generous.”
TFMoran, Inc. and its staff have
contributed to the Hurricane Harvey
and Irma relief efforts by donating to the
American Red Cross. Together the staff
donated $2,885, which combined with
TFMoran’s $2,500 gave a total donation
of $5,385.

TFMoran’s Nick Golon represents NH at 2017 National ASCE Convention

This year’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) National Convention was held in New Orleans, Louisiana in early October and was attended by two ASCE New Hampshire board members; TFMoran’s Senior Project Manager Nicholas Golon, PE – ASCE-NH Treasurer and Anabelle Allen, EIT – ASCE-NH Vice President. In the week leading up to the convention there was concern the convention may be canceled with hurricane Nate heading straight towards the Big Easy. Thankfully, the storm weakened just in time for the main days of the convention with only needing to cancel a few tours and talks. The rest of the week went off without a hitch!

For those whose travel plans were not altered by Nate, attendees of the convention were welcomed with an invigorating talk from Marci Rossell, Ph.D., who takes complex economic issues, often dull in the button-down business press, and makes them relevant to people’s lives, families, and careers. Her opening remarks set the stage for a fantastic few days of compelling short courses and thought-provoking sessions with impressive technical knowledge and expertise. Many of the sessions were centered around the recovery of New Orleans post-Katrina, which was a timely topic seeing as the city had just dodged what could have been another devastating storm.

Following the first day of a jam-packed program was a Mardi Gras themed Welcome Reception where Nick and Anabelle networked with other ASCE board members from surrounding states and chapters, sharing tips, stories, and event ideas for future ASCE get togethers!  They even found the time to pose for a few pictures with conference dignitaries.

The program on Tuesday included a talk on the Structural Innovation of designing and constructing the new NFL Stadium in Atlanta, GA. This stuck out as a favorite among many attendees only to be topped by Michael Howell and his talk on Engineering Failures. His non-typical session talked about the fundamental concept we sometimes forget…. Although engineers, we’re still human and we all make mistakes!

Wednesday wrapped up the convention with an amazing closing luncheon where all attendees soaked in the valuable insights from motivational speaker and career guru, Kaplan Mobray who spoke on how to transition your personal brand into something that reflects the true you.

“In any room, bring value to the table. If you’re not bringing value, you’re just taking up space and someone else wants your seat.” – Kaplan Mobray.

The convention was packed from beginning to end with the latest information, innovations, and technologies in the field of Civil Engineering.  Although the convention kept Nick and Anabelle plenty busy, they did manage to venture out and take in some of the sights and sounds NOLA had to offer, including a zydeco band at one of the City’s most notable restaurants, Mulate’s.

As well as some fine dining at Mother’s Restaurant, who have been serving up po’boys and down-home Southern fare since 1938.

TFMoran principals give thanks at the Annual Harvest Lunch on the campus of SNHU

The principals of TFMoran, Bob Duval, Dylan Cruess, Jeff Kevan, Paul Sbacchi and Corey Colwell, thanked their staff this holiday season by hosting the annual “Harvest Lunch” on the day before Thanksgiving. This year the lunch was held on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University at the new Gustafson Center. The principals thought it would be a nice opportunity for the staff to see many of the new projects on campus that TFMoran engineers, surveyors and landscape architects have provided services for, including the Gustafson Center. TFMoran’s Portsmouth division joined in the festive celebration, making the attendance around 70 people.

The event started with a delightful assortment of appetizers and beverages during the social hour, and a group photo taken by John Gauvin of Studio One. Sodexo caterers prepared a holiday lunch buffet which included a sirloin carving station, chicken parmesan served with pasta, and stuffed portobello mushrooms, accompanied by roasted potatoes, harvest salad and butternut squash soup. After lunch, the staff was treated to a dessert tri-level tray of pumpkin whoopee pies, raspberry mousse in chocolate cups, and strawberry cream eclairs. Everything was delightful!

TFMoran’s president Bob Duval followed the lunch with a speech on his gratitude towards the entire team in providing the hard work and dedication that makes TFMoran a success. He gave special thanks to Administrative Assistant, Joe Sears, for his 40 dedicated years to TFMoran. Bob presented Joe with a gift of appreciation, and wished him the best as he retires in December.

 

Concluding the lunch was COO, Dylan Cruess who spoke of the company’s many accomplishments over the past year, including the NHBR Best of Business Award in Engineering for the 5th straight year, and the 2017 Business Excellence Award.  Dylan attributed the recognition TFMoran receives from the community to the involvement of the staff, inside and outside of work.

Many thanks to Southern New Hampshire University and Sodexo for providing a great venue for this special event. It is always a great way to lead into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, as we give thanks to our family and friends.

TFMoran at the 2017 NH Municipal Expo

The New Hampshire Municipal Association (NHMA) 76th Annual Conference took place Wednesday, November 15 and Thursday November 16 in downtown Manchester at the Radisson Hotel. New Hampshire municipal officials attended the conference which offered extensive educational sessions over two days. This year’s theme was “The Challenge of Change”. Keynote Speaker and comedienne Jan McInnis entertained the audience with “finding the funny” in life.

The Conference included a two-day Expo with over 100 exhibitors offering the latest products and services. Thanks to all who stopped by TFM’s booth to chat with engineers and view some of our latest municipal projects, such as for the Town of Hooksett proposed roundabout at Hackett Hill Road and 3A near the I-93 Exit 11, the new Milton Fire-Rescue Station , the renovated/expanded Goffstown Church Street Fire Station #18 and the Belknap County Community Corrections facility in Laconia.

Thanks to NHMA for another great conference, looking forward to 2018!

The American Red Cross of NH & VT thanks TFMoran for generously supporting Hurricane Harvey and Irma relief efforts

In early November 2017, Maria Devlin, CEO, American Red Cross-NH & VT, visited both the Bedford and Portsmouth offices of TFMoran to thank the company and staff for generously supporting the Hurricane Harvey and Irma relief efforts. Both offices were presented with a wall plaque, as Ms. Devlin explained how the relief efforts were progressing. This wasn’t her first time visiting TFMoran, back in 2013 she presented TFMoran with a plaque for a financial contribution to the American Red Cross’ Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund.

“The employees of TFMoran have shown time and time again that they are willing to pitch in to help out the people in need whether they are in the next town, or half way around the world.”  said Dylan Cruess, COO of TFMoran. “That’s the kind of people we are proud to employ here, compassionate and generous.”

TFMoran, Inc. and TFMoran staff have contributed to the Hurricanes Harvey and Irma relief efforts by donating to the American Red Cross. Together the staff donated $2,885, which combined with TFMoran’s $2,500 gives us a total donation of $5,385.00!

Hurricane Harvey was a Category 3 hurricane that devastated eastern Texas and western Louisiana. Harvey hit the gulf coast of the U.S on Friday, August 25, 2017, bringing 130 mph winds and over 52 inches of rain! Experts estimate up to $180 billion in damage. Residents of the affected areas have lost all their belongings, leaving them homeless, hungry and lost on where to go next. The Red Cross has sent volunteers, donated money and food, and set up shelters. Almost immediately after the storm hit, volunteers headed into Houston to help, getting people safely into shelters and supplying them with food and blankets.

Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Irma started out as a Category 5 hurricane hitting parts of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti on September 5, 2017, leaving heavy flooding and damage. Next, the Florida Keys suffered severe damage on September 8th and 9th as Irma became a Category 4. Making its way to the mainland, Miami and southern Florida, the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3, with winds of over 110 mph, heavy rains, and fierce winds for the entire state. An estimated 15 million people in Florida were without power with an estimated $100 billion damage. Florida’s Governor ordered  approximately 6.3 million people to evacuate before the hurricane hit.

TFMoran Preserves Piano Mill for Residential Use

Leominster, MA – In conjunction with Maugel Architects, Inc. of Harvard, Mass., TFMoran, Inc. of Bedford, N.H. provided structural design of the renovation of the historic Jewett Piano Case factory located at 140 Adams Street in Leominster, Mass. The plan to convert the timber-framed mill building into Ivory Keys Apartments, a 43-unit affordable residential apartment building, was spearheaded by Ivory Keys, LLC, an affiliate of L.D. Russo Inc. of Harvard, the developer and constructor of the project. The entire four-story mill structure was framed of wood, rather than brick masonry at the exteriors, which is more typical of mill buildings standing today.

Before the project began, the century-old historic mill building was in disrepair and vacant for several years. An extensive field investigation and evaluation conducted prior to beginning the project to determine the feasibility uncovered several issues, including a nearly one-foot lean of the building, water damage and lateral instability issues.

The project plans include foundation work and incorporating steel frames into the building to correct the lean, lateral instability and years of neglect.

In addition to structural repairs, a significant effort was made to preserve the nature of the historic mill. This included preserving the aesthetics of the exterior. Also, interior spaces will respect the history of the building, including preserving many pieces of the interior and exposing some existing timber structure as architectural features. The attractive and structurally sound Ivory Keys Apartments will offer studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom living options.

The renovation and addition of the 140 Adams Street project will complete the redevelopment of the commercial buildings in the Adams Street neighborhood.

Construction is well underway, and apartments are anticipated to be move-in ready for the spring of 2018.

Congratulations to Business Excellence Winner, Dylan Cruess!

TFMoran’s Chief Operating Officer Dylan Cruess was honored to receive the 2017 Business Excellence Award in the Real Estate and Construction category from NH Business Review. The awards dinner reception, presented by Citizen’s Bank, was held on November 1st at the Center of NH, Radisson Hotel in downtown Manchester.  Accompanying Dylan was his family, Robert, Anne and Galen Cruess; TFM Marketing Coordinator Susan Bartley; TFM Marketing Assistant Kelsie Gagner; and TFM Chief of Survey Jim O’Neil and his wife Diane.

The event recognizes the imagination, industriousness, innovation and achievements of business owners and operators. The awards given out fall into eight categories including: Excellence in Business & Professional Services, Excellence in Consumer Services, Excellence in Financial Services, Excellence in Health Care, Excellence in Manufacturing, Excellence in non-profit, Excellence in Real Estate / Construction, Excellence in Technology, and Business Excellence Hall of Fame.

Dylan may have learned the ropes from his engineer father, but it is he and the new leadership team at TFMoran that have steered the company through a period of unprecedented growth. Since ownership of the company was transferred in 2013 to four senior employees, including Dylan, TFMoran has more than doubled its annual revenue, with continued double-digit growth. Because of Dylan’s background and upbringing, he grasps engineering, project management and surveying more than a typical operations person would. And that has enabled him to continue the original vision of TFMoran while strategically growing the company to new levels.

Having grown up among the TFMoran team, Dylan is well aware that it is the teamwork of the employees that is essential to the company’s success. That’s why Dylan has worked with the leadership team to increase the company match for employees’ 401K plans. And TFMoran’s positive culture is evidenced by its low turnover rate. Employees enjoy working at TFMoran because they are appreciated and encouraged to continue their education to become the best they can be. And the family-friendly atmosphere of the company allows not only for the flexibility to work from home when necessary but also the encouragement to give back to the community, as Dylan does.

ABC NH/VT offers a Future Leaders in Construction program

TFMoran’s Chief Operating Office, Dylan Cruess, is excited to be part of this year’s  Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) NH/VT Future Leaders in Construction course located at the ABC Headquarters in Concord, NH. The comprehensive program includes courses that run over an eight month period. The purpose of the program is to enhance leadership skills and implement managerial ideas and characteristics to those in the construction industry.

Some topics of the workshops include: Managing Conflict, Motivation and Coaching, Situational Leadership, and Goal Setting, Action Planning and Time Management. A different guest leader will be invited to each seminar and given the opportunity to speak, encourage and offer insight on being a successful leader in construction. This program is designed for “anyone who wants to make a positive impact on work and life.” The instructors are engaged, informative, impactful and experienced professionals who are very familiar with the industry and course material.
