Shadowing TFMoran’s Land Surveyors

Today, Marketing Intern Eric Poublon had the opportunity to tag along with the Land Surveying department for a day in the field.

Eric joined Morgan and Marty at Southern New Hampshire University this morning for part of their Topography and Utility Survey. Morgan and Marty demonstrated how the Prism Pole is tracked either manually or robotically by the operator or the Total Station Theodolite. This lets the team record precise measurements by communicating the vertical height and horizontal depth, allowing the instrument to draw a three dimensional line between the two surveyors and their equipment. The line will then be used to produce a topographic map of the site. They also recorded where the electrical and sewer manhole covers were located along with catch basins in the area.

Eric enjoyed his time out in the field with the Land Surveying department and getting to know the work and expertise of others at TFMoran!

A Day in the Life of TFMoran’s Land Surveyors

A few weeks ago, Marketing Intern Jackie Gamache had the opportunity to tag along with the Land Surveying department for a day in the field. On Thursday, June 22nd, Jackie shadowed field crew Morgan Hershey and Tom Wood. Jackie learned about a project our Land Surveyors are currently working on, and how data is collected in the field.

Survey Field Technician Morgan Hershey demonstrated how measurements and images are collected in the field. Using instruments such as the Robotic Total Station, our Field Crews collect data by measuring and recording distances from a specific point of reference. The data collected in the field is received at the office in real time.

Jackie had a great time tagging along with Morgan and Tom. She enjoyed seeing all the hard work that goes into Land Surveying!

TFMoran’s Land Surveying Equipment is Upgraded with the Latest Technology

TFM Land Surveyors utilize the most advanced field and office surveying technologies to provide cost-effective, efficient, and timely results. With the advanced technology of the Leica GS 16 and GS18, our surveyors obtain detailed information more efficiently. The Leica GS 16 and 18 systems provide the fastest GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and RTK (Real-Time Kinematics), meaning data can be collected in the field while being received in the office. The GNSS provides positioning and navigation, by collecting data from satellites.

Our Bedford office team had a beautiful day for training with the new equipment by a representative of Leica Geosystems back in March.

New Survey Drone Services are Off the Ground!

Eric Salovitch, TFMoran Certified Drone Pilot

TFMoran is excited to announce we have launched new survey services via drone, operated by Survey Technician and FAA Part 107 Certified Pilot, Eric Salovitch, SIT. Eric works out of TFMoran’s Seacoast Division office and is available for any project that would benefit from this new technology.

New Drone Survey Services include:

  • Aerial Mapping
  • Aerial Imagery
  • Structural Inspections
  • Construction Monitoring
  • Volume Calculations
  • Video Inspections
  • Mapping for Conceptual Design

TFMoran’s first drone project was to produce a topographic survey on a private residential road to depict low areas which are causing drainage issues. The area of interest was relatively flat with no obvious areas of relief. TFMoran were able to utilize UAV technology to limit the time the field crew had to spend in the roadway. We were able to capture millions of points along the roadway. That data was adjusted to survey grade control. The client is now not only able to identify low points in the pavement solving their drainage issues, but can also identify every pothole along the stretch of road.

There are many advantages of using UAV.  We were able to keep field crews safe and out of the traveled way. We were able to provide the client with more data. We have a survey grade location every 0.3’ compared to conventional data which is 45’ +/-. Since this is a private community, TFMoran provided a few aerial images to the client which is a by-product of our survey. It doesn’t take us any additional time to capture these photos and is a great complimentary product.

We are looking forward to our next Aerial Mapping project!

Celebrating Women In Construction Week! Meet Brenda Kolbow, TFMoran Survey Project Manager.

March 5 – 11 is National Women in Construction Week.  According to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) website, “The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. It is also a time for local chapters to give back to their communities. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.”

In celebration of WIC, TFMoran is highlighting our own Women In Construction, one TFMoran woman engineer or surveyor each day this week. TFMoran is proud to have these women in construction, along with other women professionals on our team.

Brenda Kolbow, PLS – TFMoran, Inc. Survey Project Manager

Brenda Kolbow, PLS is a Survey Project Manager working out of TFMoran’s Portsmouth division office.  She is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in the states of Maine and North Carolina. Brenda is responsible for the management and coordination of survey projects with internal staff, clients, contractors, and regulatory officials from proposal through the completion of construction. Her field skills include boundary, topographic, ALTA, construction layout and as-built surveys, along with total station data collection and GPS static and kinetic observations.  Brenda’s has an Associate’s degree in Surveying Technology from Western Piedmont Community College in North Carolina.

Why did you go into land surveying?

I happen to like math and I wanted a serious career that provides people with a service that helps them accomplish their goals. You can really see the difference when you participate in a project from beginning to end.

What do you think women should know upon entering the land surveying field?

The number of women in the land surveying field is continuing to grow. The divide is getting less and less, the ultimate goal is to provide an accurate professional product and that is what everyone is working towards.

What are the challenges of your career?

The work/home life balance is difficult because it always seems there is more you could do on both ends.
