Built to Connect: Highlights from the 2025 Plan NH Fall Conference

This past Wednesday, September 17, professionals from across New Hampshire gathered in Concord for the Plan NH Fall Conference, centered around the theme: Built to Last: Reducing Impact, Maximizing Performance. On the surface, this may sound like a technical conversation about sustainable materials or energy-efficient buildings, the event delved much deeper. Through five engaging speakers, the conference explored the human, environmental, and community dimensions of designing spaces that truly stand the test of time.

Nancy E. Smith – CEO, GrowSmart Maine

Nancy Smith opened the day with a powerful reminder of how the pandemic reshaped our sense of place. She spoke about the loss of “third places”—parks, libraries, and gathering spots—and how essential they are to mental health and community life. Through storytelling, she challenged us to design spaces that foster human connection and trust. In a unique moment, she asked attendees to write haikus about connection, sparking spontaneous conversations and reminding us that design is ultimately about people.

Emma Sabella – Senior Waste Reduction Consultant, CET

Emma Sabella shared practical, inspiring solutions for reducing construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Representing the Center for EcoTechnology, she outlined how deconstruction—carefully dismantling buildings to salvage materials—can save money, support reuse outlets, and divert tons of waste from landfills. Emma emphasized that CET’s technical assistance is free, thanks to USDA funding, and shared real-world examples of adaptive reuse and smart material recovery. Her message: sustainability starts with planning, and there’s value in what we might otherwise throw away.

David Webb – Commercial Sales Lead, ReVision Energy

David Webb brought the conversation into the world of clean energy and building performance. Representing ReVision Energy, he highlighted practical ways to integrate renewable systems into commercial and residential projects. He also addressed barriers communities face—such as access to incentives and understanding evolving technologies. His session emphasized that reducing environmental impact isn’t just about new construction, but also retrofitting existing buildings with systems that are efficient, affordable, and scalable.

Matt O’Keefe – Energy Efficiency Coordinator, Unitil/NH Saves

Matt O’Keefe offered insight into how local utilities and programs like NH Saves are helping to improve energy performance across New Hampshire. He spoke about accessible energy efficiency measures for homes and businesses, and how smart design choices today can lead to lasting savings. By breaking down technical programs into clear, actionable steps, Matt helped demystify energy upgrades and showed how they can align with both sustainability goals and local economic development.

Joe Knapik – Technical Director, RPF Environmental

Joe Knapik provided a sobering but necessary perspective on worker health and safety in construction and environmental projects. With decades of experience in industrial hygiene, Joe reminded attendees that sustainability must include the people doing the work. He raised awareness about mental health challenges in the trades and emphasized the importance of managing hazardous materials safely. His call to action was clear: protect the workers, not just the materials. True sustainability is both environmental and human.

The 2025 Plan NH Fall Conference was a reminder that strong communities are built on connection—between people, places, and purpose. It reflected TFMoran’s focus on creating thoughtful, sustainable solutions that truly serve the communities we help shape. We are always proud to be a sponsor of Plan NH!

TFMoran Celebrates Women in Construction Week!

It’s National Women in Construction Week 2025! Organized by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), Women in Construction (WIC) Week, with the theme of “Together We Rise” celebrates the strength and knowledge of women and the vital role they play for the future of the construction industry. This year WIC Week is running from March 2nd-8th, shines a spotlight on the incredible women shaping the construction industry and honors the achievements of women in a variety of roles—from builders, engineers, and surveyors to project managers, administrators, and leaders.

WIC Week not only celebrates the vital contributions women make across the construction sector, but it also aims to raise awareness and inspire future generations to pursue careers in this dynamic field. Since its inception in 1998, NAWIC has used WIC Week as a platform to promote the success and impact of women in construction. As we mark the 27th year of WIC Week, let’s continue to build on this legacy and inspire change for a more inclusive and diverse industry!

For this year’s WIC Week celebration, TFMoran Environmental Scientist, Kyra Higgins, was featured in a Q+A article in both High Profile Magazine and the New England Real Estate Journal

March 2025

Kyra Higgins is an Environmental Scientist at TFMoran. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Conservation and Sustainability from the University of New Hampshire. She is passionate about environmental education as well as finding innovative, nature-based, equitable solutions to the pressing natural resource and climate-related issues.

Kyra says a project she is most proud of is a Wetland Functional Assessment Report she completed in Fall of 2023 for a large residential development in Bedford, NH. She says, “With a tight deadline, I worked overtime to ensure the report was thorough and detailed, particularly on wetlands and proposed avoidance techniques. A few weeks later, the NHDES reviewer praised the report for its organization and use of their Wetland Rules. This feedback was rewarding, as it showed that my hard work made a positive impact while strengthening TFMoran’s Relationship with NHDES. It was encouraging for future coordination and finding common ground between developers and state agencies”

Kyra’s mom has been her biggest inspiration in her career. Kyra says, “She worked full-time while always balancing family and career. She left the finance industry to become a fitness trainer, following her passion. Her journey reminds me to pursue what excites and motivates me.” Kyra’s advice to the next generation of women in AEC: ” Find your passion, even if it takes time, and trust that when you’re passionate, you’ll do your best work!”

TFMoran Stormwater Department: Balancing Infrastructure and Nature in Nashua, NH

The TFMoran Stormwater Team is working with R.S. Audley of Bow, NH on the NHDOT F.E. Everett Turnpike widening project that includes replacing two 70-year-old bridges over Bowers Pond; the main source of Nashua’s water supply. The TFMoran team prepared the stream diversion, dewatering, erosion control, and stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPP) for the project.

In addition to preparing the environmental plans for the project, TFMoran’s EPA Certified personnel are providing turbidity monitoring while R.S. Audley is performing in-water work to confirm the project is compliant with the NH Surface Water Quality Standards.

Preparatory work began in the spring on a new six-lane bridge that will cross Bower’s Brook and Pond, a reservoir located beneath the F.E. Everett Turnpike, connecting Nashua and Merrimack between Exits 8 and 10. This work includes placing fill material in the pond where the new bridge approaches are and monitoring the material for settlement prior to constructing the new bridges.

While ensuring smooth traffic flow during this vital highway widening project from Nashua to Bedford has been a primary focus, equally important is safeguarding the drinking water supply and protecting the wildlife in the surrounding undeveloped woods.

Check out Union Leader’s full article to learn about the project’s full scope and how the project teams are balancing between necessary construction and the importance of preserving nature.
